The Pomme de Terre Beekeepers Association met Thursday, July 13 at the Central Hickory Fire and Rescue Galmey Fire Station. Thirty-two people were in attendance. President Lynn Williams and Secretary Nicole Neeld presided.
They started with a review of business carried over from the previous meeting. This included voting in Alicia Jimenez as the new Treasurer, a discussion regarding upcoming involvement in Heritage Days and upcoming utilization of the retired Master Gardener Hives.
The group discussed new items starting with Amparo Payne, the Vice President, introducing her scholarship idea.
Payne presented the idea of “Beekeeping through scholarship” which would be a way to help another young person interested in beekeeping via scholarship. The program would likely involve FFA and be awarded based on an essay applicants write to display interest in the program. The winner would receive mentorship and hands-on learning.
After this discussion, the group also agreed it would be good to incorporate the Master Gardener Hives discussed earlier, into this scholarship program.
The group scheduled the annual extraction party for Friday, August 11th. Details of this may be obtained through the Beekeepers Association by calling 417-745-6767 .
The group continued discussions including topics of hive conditions, protecting honeycomb, honey production, methods of feeding bees, watering bees, pest conditions and remedies.
The group meets the second Thursday of every month. The next meeting will coincide with the Extraction Party.
