A special program on dugout canoes will be held this Sunday by the Pomme de Terre Chapter of the Missouri Archaeological Society.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, Jack Ray, Emeritus Archaeologist with Missouri State University, will present The Dugout Canoes From Missouri: Prehistoric and Historic Travel in Small Wooden Boats. This event is free and open to the public and will be at the old Dollar General store on the west side of Hermitage.
According to Roger Boyd, chairman of the Pomme de Terre Archeological Society, due to their perishable nature, these canoes rarely survived to become part of the archaeological record. However, several log boats of prehistoric and historic age have been discovered in Missouri. Ray will offer an overview of these dugouts with discussions on canoe morphology and other attributes, such as wood species and radiocarbon ages.
Refreshments will be provided. Free archaeology posters and a drawing for several door prizes will be held after the program. For further information you may call Roger or Susan Boyd at (417) 745-0203, or email rboyd590@gmail.com.
