The 12th annual Don Moerschel Fishing For Vets Memorial Derby took place Saturday, Sept. 16, at Pomme de Terre Lake. The event kicked off bright and early at 7 a.m. from The Harbor Boat Launch, with anglers eagerly competing to catch the biggest fish. Weigh-ins were held at 3 p.m., followed by a taco bar meal served at the Galmey VFW. Attendees could participate by making a donation.

The derby boasted a $1,000 first place payout, with additional payouts for the top four places. There were also special sidepot, for the largest bass caught. In total, 86 fish were caught, weighing a combined 162.28 pounds.

Thirty-five boats registered for the derby, with both new participants and experienced anglers from KC, St. Louis, Springfield, and the local area.

Aside from the main prizes, there were other giveaways and rewards. Sean Breshears and Carl Rife won the Early Bird Drawing and were rewarded with their entry fees paid for next year’s derby, as well as fishing gear. An assortment of prizes, including a wine and cheese basket and Air BnB gift cards, were also given away. Furthermore, a 50/50 raffle took place, with one lucky winner receiving a prize of $114.

Fifty-percent of the proceeds generated during the derby was donated to the Galmey VFW Post 9638. Don Moerschel, the event’s namesake, was not only a veteran who served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, but also a dedicated member of the VFW, holding the position of Jr. Vice Commander. Moerschel had a great passion for fishing and enjoyed participating in bass tournaments with his friends. This memorial derby stands as a tribute to his memory and his dedication to both his country and his beloved sport.
